Picture Postcards in the United States, 1893-1918
    by George and Dorothy Miller

Too many postcard books published these days are what I call "picture books". They are light on information but have lots of pretty pictures. Picture Postcards in the United States 1893-1918 is not like those books.

George and Dorothy Miller pack in more postcard information per page than any other. If you are seriously interested in the history of early American postcards this book is required reading.

This is the best book ever written about post cards. The first edition was published in 1975 by George & Dorothy Miller. Shortly after publication, the Millers were divorced and Dorothy got the rights to the book. She published an update in 1976, and the last printing was in 1982. The book was printed in hard and soft covers, and came with a price guide. The way Dorothy set the prices for the cards, is she contacted various dealers and collectors, of which I was one that was contacted, and sent them a list of the cards, and asked us to price the cards. She then tok an average of the prices received, and arrived at an actual retail price for the guide. This book tells you how many cards in a set, information on artists, info on the publishers, a great lot of information on early expos, political cards, pioneers, just about everything you would want to know. Although the price guide is now 27 years old, it can still be used, to give you an idea to prices. The text in this book is good forever, and someone should get the rights to reprint this book now, for all it needs is an updated price guide. I have an original hard copy signed by the Millers, and a 1982 soft cover signed by Dorothy.
I purchased one of these books at my club auction several years ago for $110.00, and resold it the next day for $140.00.The demand for the books at that time was greater than the supply. I checked Abe's Books online, and I see that you can buy them quite cheap today. Those book dealers do not know the real value of these books. Buy one now, and get the 1982 edition. I suggest one in good condition.
